LEVEL 5 DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION AND TRAINING (DET)
The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) was introduced in the summer of 2014 as a replacement for the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector or DTLLS qualification.
The Diploma in Education and Training qualification is very similar in most aspects to the former DTLLS but has a revised set of units which better reflect the requirements of modern teaching within the FE and Skills Sector of education.
The Diploma in Education and Training has been designed to meet the needs of a range of trainee teachers including:
- Trainee teachers who are currently in a full/part time, or occasional teaching role and who can meet the qualification teaching practice requirements.
- Assessors wishing to attain a teaching qualification who can meet the qualification teaching practice requirements.
Our DET Student Handbook will provide more details on the qualification and the component units.
Learners who achieve the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training and who are progressing to higher education accredited qualifications at Level 6 or above may have their level 5 credit recognised in line with the higher education institution’s arrangements for the recognition of prior learning.
Prior achievement of a Level 4 Certificate in Education (CET) and Training or Level 4 Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) is not a requirement to enrol onto the Diploma in Education and Training course. However, learners who have already achieved the CET or CTLLS qualifications may carry over 20 hours of teaching practice and two hours of observed teaching towards the Diploma in Education and Training requirements.
Also, learners who have already achieved a Level 4 Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) or a Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (CET) , may transfer credit from these qualifications to cover the initial Diploma in Education and Training mandatory unit: ‘Teaching, Learning and Assessment in Education and Training’.
The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training is delivered by distance learning / online learning with all course materials being accessed via our own Moodle based on-line learning platform. The Diploma in Education and Training has a value of 120 credits, these are achieved by completing a number of mandatory and optional units, the details of these are provided in the attached Student Handbook. You may commence the course at any time and progress at your own pace; however the usual completion period is around 12 months.
The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training requires you to be observed delivering teaching sessions on a minimum of eight occasions. These observations will be conducted by your tutor and/or suitably qualified teachers/trainers from your own area of practice. Observations by video link/recording is possible as long as certain quality assurance requirements are met, you should discuss this option directly with your tutor. In addition to the teaching observations, you will also be required to evidence a minimum of 100 hours of teaching practice over the course period.
The course cost is £1870.00 + VAT (£2244.00 incl. VAT). This can be paid in full at the commencement of the course or in three instalments of £748.00 incl. VAT (first payment on commencement of the course, second at the midpoint of the programme and the final payment on completion).
