What is the relevance of Maslow’s Hierarchical Needs in Education and Training?

I have mentioned Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs in previous posts so here I want to go into more detail as to why I think this is a relevant theory for teachers or trainers.  Maslow’s ideas are often used as a theory of motivation in different forums, however, if you dig a little deeper, you will realise that it can be applied to so many different areas.  In summary, the theory suggests that in order for humans to reach their full potential and achieve self-actualisation (the best version of themselves that they can be), a series of lower order needs must be met.  An individual’s attitude or behaviour could be linked to a barrier in achieving their needs and if you have an awareness and understanding of this when in a teaching or training role, it can help you to respond more effectively to your learners, ensuring that you create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.  From a business perspective, if you provide access to high quality training that supports employees and meets their needs, you will have a workforce that is not only striving to do their best, but is also more productive, efficient, autonomous and happy.  All of these will impact positively on employee health and wellbeing.

Just to be clear, I am not saying that it is solely your responsibility as a teacher or trainer to ensure that everyone’s needs are met, however there are things that you can do in a training setting to support these.  And knowledge is power!  Having an awareness and understanding of these theories and how they apply, increases your individual emotional intelligence which can help you respond effectively, particularly in challenging situations.

I recently delivered this session to one of our AET cohorts and I had a great discussion with a learner who gained insight into how his role as a trainer could influence the culture of his organisation and reduce negative perceptions that existed between workers and managers.  A wonderful example of how this theory could be applied in his workplace and a demonstration of our commitment to delivering learning experiences that are inspirational, influential and transformational.
