What is the relevance of Maslow's Hierarchical Needs in Education and Training?
I have mentioned Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs in previous posts so here I want to go into more detail as […]
In August 2024, the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training was discontinued and replaced with the Diploma in Teaching. The new qualification is comprehensive and includes fresh modules such as Digital and Online Pedagogy to reflect the leap we all made in this area during Covid times. The teaching practice requirements are also enhanced resembling those on PGCE courses.
As a training provider specialising in education and assessment for the blue light services and public sector, we’re committed to providing the most relevant and effective qualifications for our learners. Yet, we’ve made the decision at Maxam not to offer the new Level 5 Diploma in Teaching.
Why?
Whilst I am sure that these changes have been designed to support the quality and consistency of provision, I do feel that the new diploma is more aligned to mainstream teaching in FE rather than the wider Education and Training sector.
The large majority of our customers on the DET are industry trainers. We consulted with them about the incoming changes and the main feedback coming out was that the new qualification would be difficult to achieve, especially given that a number of industry trainers are also operational in their roles.
For our target audience of learners – professionals working within the blue light services and public sector – this qualification may not be the most appropriate or beneficial.
Focus: The Diploma heavily emphasises teaching within a formal educational setting, which may not directly translate to the specific needs and contexts of workplace training.
Relevance: The skills and knowledge required for effective workplace training often differ significantly from those needed in a traditional classroom environment.
So what are the alternatives?
Following the consultation, Maxam Training are proposing to offer a Lead Trainer Programme as a bolt-on to the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training. This will include modules at Level 5 and has been designed specifically with industry training in mind (as well as supporting our vision to be trailblazers in the sector). There is definitely a space in this arena for industry focussed training underpinned by core theory relating to pedagogy.
Maxam Training aims to develop outstanding trainers through its courses and qualifications as we recognise the important role that training plays, not only in skills development, but also in influencing organisational culture and systemic attitudes and behaviours.
We encourage you to discuss your individual training and development needs with our team. We can advise you on the most appropriate qualifications and pathways to meet your career goals.
And, if the level 5 Diploma in Teaching is what you need, then we can signpost you to some great training providers that are offering this!

At Maxam Training, the term’ quality’ appears in our mission statement and values, so what does this mean? For us, it means always reviewing our products and services and making changing that have a positive impact on our learners. It means maintaining the integrity of our qualifications whilst meeting the varying needs of our customers.
If you have a passion for knowledge or skills that you possess, teaching or training can be a great way for you to share your enthusiasm and inspire others. As a teacher or trainer, you also hold a position of responsibility where you can influence how your learners feel about themselves. It gives you insight into the potential of others that they may not even realise they have.
